SUMMARY

We present the results of the surgycal treatment of 51 cases of oligodendrogliomas operated in Neoplastic Diseases Institute in the lapse from 1984-1997. Results: The mean age was 35,9 years old (range 5- 70). The sintomatology more frecuent was convultions (56,8%) and hemiplegia (35,3%). Twenty seven cases (52,9%) were in left hemisferic, 17 (33%) patients in rigth hemisferic, four (7,8%) in the posterior fossa and three in the callosum body. In 29 cases (56,9%), the tumors were from 3-5 cm and older 5,0 cm in 22 patients (43,1%).

In 22 tumors (43,1%) calcification were present. The tomographics characteristics corresponded to hypo and isodensity forms in 37 cases (72,5%). The Karnofski performance in the preoperatory was 70-100 in 40 patients (78,4%), this porcentage improved to 92,2% (47 cases) in the postoperatory. To carry total resection in 15 cases (29,4%) and partial resection in 36 patients (70,6%). Postoperatory mortality was 5,8% (three cases). Patology (OMS).In 29 cases (56,9%) were Low grade oligodndroglioma and in 22 patients (43,1%) were anaplastic oligodendroglioma.

Alone 45 patients received radiotiterapy with fractional doses of 2 Gy daily; total irradiation doses ranged 44-60 Gy (average 56 Gy).
The influencing factors in survival were the high Karnofski in the preoperatory, total resection the tumor (p<0.0018), tumor of grade low malignancy (p<0.0004) and intratumoral cacifications (p<0.017).

Key words:
* Low grade oligodendroglioma. * Survival. *Anaplastic oligodendroglioma. *Radiotherapy
