COMPLICACIONES DE CIRUGÍA TIROIDEA

SUMMARY

This is a retrospective study of thyroid surgery performad at the INEN between 1990 and 1991, to evaluate the extent and type of th.yroidectomy and complications derived from the procedure.

During the study period 297 thyroidectomies were caried out, in 46.13% of cases it was lobetomy + isthmectomy, in 9.42% a total thyroidectomy was performed.

40% of patients had cancer,of different histological types, 60% had benign pathology 5O% of the surgical procederues were performed by the Head and Neck staff and the remaining 50% by the surgical residents in the Head and Neck Department.

29 patients presented complications (10%), the most frequent one being paralysis of the recurrent laringeal nerve, in 11 patients (3.7%). Hypoparathyroidism was seen in 10 patients (3.4%) in 9 it was transient and in one case permanent.

There are various factors that can be responsible for complications during surgery, these are related to the localizacion of the organ it's relation to other anatomic sites. The most importante factor is the adequate training of the surgeons and the learning of the anatomy and surgical techniques to avoid them.
