SUMMARY
A retrospective and descriptive study of a group of patients with cutaneous basal cell
carcinoma and treated with superficial radiotherapy was performed at the Hospital Central
FAP.
We registered 78 patients from January 1976 to December 2000, all of them diagnosed
clinical and histopathologically of basal cell carcinoma of the skin. The average age was
74 years and were slightly more frequent in males (43/78) (55%); the skin types III and IV
were the most affected and the nodular type of basal cell carcinoma was the predominant
lesion in our study (47/48) (59%); most of the lesions (95%) are located on the head and
35% of them raised on the nose; 62% of the lesions were small measuring less than 15 mm of
diameter
The average doses/session of radiotherapy performed in those patients was 440 cGy/session
and an average of 10 sessions per patient, the treatment was almost the same among the
different types and location of basal cell carcinoma with good outcome; there were only
few sequels post radiation such as hypo pigmentation and atrophy, None of our patients
developed another neoplasm associated with radiotherapy
Key Words: Basal Cell Carcinoma, Superficial Radiotherapy.
